Mobile Bridge Learning for Hadzabe Children
Implementation Area: Lake Eyasi Basin, Karatu District, Arusha Region, Tanzania.
Project Duration: August 2026 to July 2027.
Summary: This project aims to bring inclusive, early childhood, and culturally friendly educational opportunities directly to the settlements of the semi-nomadic Hadzabe community (children aged 4–9) to build a solid foundation for learning without disrupting or breaking their culture.
The Challenge
Nomadic Lifestyle and Distance: The Hadzabe community traditionally follows water sources and wildlife. Formal schools are located far away and are not built considering their nomadic lifestyle.
Language and Cultural Barriers: Most children start school speaking only their native language, making it difficult to learn in Swahili or English.
High Out-of-School Rates: Nearly 40% of Hadzabe children aged 4–9 have never attended school, and many drop out early due to a lack of a supportive environment.
Our Solution: Mobile Bridge Learning
Mobile Education Teams: Small education teams visiting Hadzabe settlements directly to conduct short learning sessions.
Playful & Cultural Learning: Utilizing traditional stories, songs, games, and basic literacy, numeracy, and writing exercises.
Local Facilitators: Engaging teachers or youth from within the Hadzabe community to build trust and ensure training aligns with their culture.
Gender Inclusion: Ensuring equal participation of girls and boys and raising parents’ awareness about the importance of education for all.
Project Innovation Approach
Rooted in Indigenous Foundations: Instead of forcing children to follow a rigid standard school system, the project adapts the educational approach to fit the Hadzabe lifestyle.
Design Thinking Approach: Starting with a simple prototyping phase, receiving community feedback, and refining methods before expanding the scope.
Implementation Roadmap
Prototyping Phase: August to December 2026 in Endamaghan ward involving 40 children (20 girls and 20 boys).
Testing & Expansion Phase: January to July 2027 involving three communities, including Baray ward (Endesh and Endamageu), reaching a total of 110 children.
Partners & Funders
Implementing Organization: Community Aid and Social Education Empowerment (CASEE).
Funder: PCF Innovation Fund.
Key Stakeholders: Karatu District Council, Education Officers (DEO, WEO), and neighboring primary schools.
